CHEMISTRY IN THE RITCHIE GROUP

Speculate, Create and Innovate. Our research programme strives to use the boundless toolkit of synthetic chemistry to create new materials that have the potential to be both fundamentally and commercially valuable. 

We are interested in the design and realisation of self -assembled molecules that have unique properties that result from the combination of the constituent parts. Of particular interest are species that show significant sensitivity to their surroundings, with control of the many environmental variables facilitating the use of these molecules as sensors. Incorporation of these molecular components into materials and optimisation of the desired responses is then informed through consultation with industrial partners.

PHOTOCHROMISM (SELF-ORGANIZATION, SPECTROSCOPY AND MATERIALS)

Photochromic compounds interconvert between two stable species in a reversible manner. This process is induced in one or both directions by energy supplied to the system in the form of a specific wavelength of light.
